Fireworks make celebrations exciting, but they can also be dangerous to your eyes. Follow these simple tips to protect your vision and enjoy the festivities safely.
Before the Show:
- Pick a Safe Spot: Watch fireworks from a safe distance to avoid sparks or debris.
- Wear Safety Glasses: Look for spectacles labeled as “impact-resistant” or designed for outdoor activities. These are available at hardware stores or online and provide a good defense against flying sparks and debris.
During the Display:
- Stay Back: Keep at least 500 feet away from the launch site.
- Avoid Direct Staring: Don’t look directly at exploding fireworks to prevent eye damage.
- Supervise Kids: Keep children away from fireworks and ensure they’re with an adult.
- Skip Alcohol: Alcohol can impair judgment, increasing the risk of accidents.
After the Show:

If you experience eye pain, redness, blurred vision, or notice something in your eye, seek immediate care from an eye doctor. Early treatment can prevent serious injuries.
Additional Tips:
- Say No to Homemade Fireworks: These are very dangerous and can cause severe eye damage.
- Know the Rules: Check local laws on fireworks to stay safe and legal.
- Try Alternatives: Glow sticks or noisemakers are safer options.
- Protect Against UV: Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV radiation.
For Photographers:
- Use Safety Gear: Wear protective glasses while photographing fireworks.
- Avoid Staring: Use a remote trigger or timer to avoid looking directly at fireworks.
Reminder:
One careless moment can lead to permanent vision loss. Celebrate responsibly and keep your eyes safe.
