This was the story of Roger Francolen Jr. or Tatay Roger, a 49-year-old father from Turague, Sagnay, Camarines Sur, who suffered vision problems in both eyes.
Tatay Roger is the father of Yaya from the well-loved “Yaya Series” of Deejai on Facebook. While Yaya’s humor has brought smiles to many online, their family faced a quiet battle at home as Tatay Roger struggled with worsening eyesight. What started as a simple difficulty in seeing grew into a serious condition that affected his daily life and his role as a father.

The First Surgery: Hope for the Right Eye
On January 29, 2025, Legazpi Eye Center’s team, led by Dr. John Solamo, performed cataract surgery on Tatay Roger’s right eye. Before the surgery, his vision was so limited that he could only count fingers held up a few feet away. After the procedure, his sight dramatically improved to 20/25, almost close to normal vision. This outcome restored not only his vision, but also his hope for what was to come.
The Second Surgery: Overcoming Bigger Challenges
While the success of the first surgery was a huge relief, Tatay Roger’s left eye posed an even greater challenge. Aside from cataract, he also had retinal problems that complicated his case.
On June 18, 2025, Dr. Paolo Paladio and his team performed a combined procedure — cataract surgery with pars plana vitrectomy. Through skilled care, the operation was a success, and his left eye vision improved to 20/30

Today, Tatay Roger enjoys clearer vision and a renewed sense of independence. His journey is not only about the recovery of his sight, but also a reminder of the importance of accessible and compassionate eye care for every Filipino.
